All eBooks, regardless of provider or platform, can be viewed on a computer or mobile device with an internet browser. There is always an option to view the book right inside of a browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc.) even on a tablet or a phone. You will need to be connected to the internet to read an eBook in an browser. Look for options on an eBooks page that say "Read Online," "PDF Full Text," or simply click on chapter headings to view the text online.
Most eBooks also offer options to download portions or the entire book for offline reading. Each provider handles this a little differently.
To access eBooks provided by FGCU you need to be prepared to enter your FGCU email address and password to log in.
A Step-by-step walkthrough.
- Find an ebook you want to read (See the FAQ on finding ebooks). Click the “Available Online” link for the book you want to read.
- You'll then see one or more options for viewing the book online. Click any and if one doesn't work, try another. You will be prompted to enter your network credentials (FGCU email and password) to view ebooks.
- What the book will look like when it loads will depend on what company we get the book from. Here are examples of different types of ebooks we have and what you would do to read them online (not download).
ProQuest
Click one of the “Read Online” links to start reading the book. A full download of the book would require additional reader software connected to an Adobe ID.
EBSCO
Click the “PDF Full Text” or “EPUB Full Text” links on the left to start reading the book. A full download of the book would require a free EBSCO account and additional reader software connected to an Adobe ID.
JSTOR
Scroll down to the Table of Contents for the book. You then must select a chapter and click “Read Online.” You can also download the PDFs of the chapter with not additional software needed.
Taylor and Francis
Choose “Read Online” under the cover of the book to start reading. You can also download the whole book in a PDF with no additional steps or software.
Springer
You can download a full PDF of the book with no additional steps or reader required. You can also scroll down and open up individual chapters.
IEEE
Scroll down to find the Chapter list and select chapter PDFs to download and open. No additional software is needed.
iGLibrary Plus
Choose “Read” under the cover of the book to start reading.
