The FGCU Library’s first choice for using films or video in an online course is to obtain films licensed for streaming in an educational environment. Our streaming video collections already contain films that can be used in online courses. If a requested film is available for purchase from one of our streaming media platforms, the library will not be able to convert a DVD.
The best thing to do is to contact your subject librarian with the title(s) of the film(s) you want available to stream online and the library will figure out the next steps.
There may be many different types of streaming availability with different implications depending on the use requested. The Library’s analysis is as follows:
If it is available from… | Library decision on format conversion |
---|---|
Academic streaming platforms (Academic Video Online, Films on Demand, Swank etc. https://library.fgcu.edu/az.php?t=2423) | The licensed version must be purchased. DVDs cannot be converted. |
|
|
Mass market streaming platform purchase (Google Play, YouTube, Apple, Amazon Video) |
The library can’t purchase this type. Clips could be made from DVDs to put on course reserve if considered Fair Use. |
Mass market subscription platform (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) |
Library can’t purchase this type. Instructors may not screen from personal accounts (Netflix has some exceptions for Netflix exclusive documentaries). Clips could be made from DVDs to be put on course reserve if considered Fair Use. |
No streaming option appears to be available from usual sources. |
Contact distributor/vendor to ask if a streaming version is available to license or if permission is granted to convert. If distributor/vendor is not available, does not answer, or presents an unreasonable cost or barrier to the library to license the film, conversion from DVD may be possible. |
